Classic Mayfair Penthouse

Our design inspiration for today comes from an elegant, classic design penthouse in central London’s exclusive Mayfair district with excellent views across the city’s skyline including Green Park and Buckingham Palace.  The new owners, an international family, purchased the 7000 square-foot residence, located within a 1904 heritage protected Old Park Lane building, to establish for themselves a London base for when they were in the city.  Luigi Esposito and his team at Oro Bianco Interior Design were called in to transform the space into a luxury home where the family could both comfortably reside and entertain with great style.

The family asked the design team to restore the noble proportions of the main public rooms, and where possible, to extend those proportions into the more intimate family areas as well.  The interior architecture had to be reconfigured a bit to create a home suitable for modern living, while also preserving and restoring the exquisite period architectural details.  The design team was to create a home that was classic in its design, but completely contemporary in its function.  The completed residence would also need to properly display their extensive collection of modern art, and perform a list of other special functions.  The home was to be turn-key completed, as in perfectly move-in ready with everything in place including the linens and dishes, and rather quickly.  Note:  The design house had just come together and this was their first project as a team.

Park Lane Entrance Hall-detail

The penthouse was designed so that the foyer, entrance hall, drawing room, library, and formal dining room could all be used for grand entertaining beautifully when the series of lacquered wood and glass double doors connecting them were open.  These same rooms have also been designed to function perfectly for more intimate family gatherings as well.  The photo above shows the foyer as it opens onto the entrance hall.  The design team has anchored the room with a statement making ormolu-mounted Louis XIV commode, inlaid with tortoiseshell marquetry and placed a dazzling mirror above it.

Park Lane Grand Entrance Hall

A grand formal entrance hall has been created to set the tone for the home’s glamorous interiors.  The classic design black and white marble floors are polished as brilliantly as the lacquered doors.   The pair of crystal chandeliers are reflected forever in the large antique gilded mirror on the far wall.  An ebonized and ormolu-mounted Louis XV-style marquetry inlaid desk in the Boulle technique has been used to center this space, and it has been topped with an ink-well in the same style.  The room’s crown molding has been expertly restored to its original splendor.  The imposing sets of double doors are indeed intended to give the room an air of grandness, but they are also practical for the glass allows the natural light from this area to flow through into the rooms beyond.

Park Lane Drawing Room

Here we have the double volume drawing room, which is sublime interior design.  This is classic good taste, timeless!  The paneled walls emphasize the rooms height and volume.  Another fabulous large crystal chandelier illuminates the space.  The colors are soft and perfect, while the surfaces are smooth and reflective.  The lead designer Luigi, started his career in fashion.  He was in visual design with Prada and Donna Karen, and he acted as a design consultant with Ralph Lauren.  That really shows here.  An antique c.1870 Hepplewhite secretaire bookcase serves as a focal point and it divides the two seating arrangements.  The Soane sofas have been covered in luxury design rich silks and silk velvets, with some being created with a medieval embossing technique of dusting the fabric in tarnished metals.  The sofa skirts are trimmed with bullion and the some of the pillows include passementerie as well.  The large windows which have been framed with two layers of tailored draperies are actually sets of French doors that open to balconies.

Park Lane Library

The drawing room flows into the cozy library that has been created with bespoke design shelves and cabinetry around a central traditional design fireplace.  The classic design ideas have been carefully handled.  The property, of course, is fully automated and features Lutron lighting, underfloor heating, motorized blinds and concealed speakers, along with all of the other amenities necessary for a modern luxury home. They are just managed discreetly.   Nothing was allowed to impact the property’s classical features.  The design team also worked very closely with the Conservation Department to ensure that they fully understood and approved their designs.

Park lane dining room

For the formal dining room, a custom hand-crafted table of bespoke design by Linley was created.  Linley being the wood working company founded by David Linley, nephew to Queen Elizabeth II.  The table and its beautiful inlaid designs have been created with Brazilian Mahogany, Amboyna, and American Walnut along with some exotic woods.  It can seat as many as eighteen people comfortably under the glow of the crystal chandelier.

Park Lane Powder Room-001

An exquisite powder room!

Park Lane bedroom hallway

The bedroom corridor features back-lit, hand-painted eglomise glass panels which give the impression of natural light streaming in from both sides.  A series of translucent glass panels in an English Garden theme were created.  Each panels’ front and middle layers of glass were painted with botanicals with a final, back layer of sandblasted glass to produce a beautiful, soft translucent effect.

For the master bedroom, since blue is the client’s favorite color, it was chosen for the primary color for this room.  Blue silk has been used to upholster the head and footboard of a Rosewood Simonetto bed.  The draperies are made with blue silk, threaded with silver and hand-detailed with Swarovski crystals.  The walls are finished with a bespoke design silver-leaf damask wall covering.  The closets were all custom made in Italy and installed on site.  They were perfectly planned and finished with rich lacquered wood, inset with mirror panels.  The silk carpet is layered with an antique Persian rug.  Even the chair at the desk is hand embroidered.  To complete the room, another beautiful classic chandelier shines like jewelry.  The master bathroom is where the serious detailing is found.  The marble floors have been inset with a mosaic of over 30,000 pieces of semi-precious stones, such as amethyst, lapis lazuli, mother-of-pearl, and carnelian.  All of this beneath beautiful layers of crown molding above.

The home includes two guest bedrooms with en suite bathrooms, which have been finished out with as much care and attention as the rest of the home.

..and for a final detail.  The son in this family, a recent MBA graduate from a prestigious American business school, would be having the entire upper floor designed specifically for his own personal use.  The rest of the family would only ever be at this home a few times a year for a few weeks at most.  The son would be here more often and he wanted his upper floor to be a little different from the rest of the residence.

The upper floor has been given a more contemporary design with bold, rich colors and a more masculine mood.  The walls have been finished with Macassar ebony paneling as well as specially created eglomise mirror panels finished with Palladian leaf.  The space is complete and independent of anything below really with its own kitchen even.  This upper floor also includes a series of retractable glass roofs.  It’s a very cosmopolitan, sophisticated design.

Yes!  The completed home was a success!  This was Oro Bianco Interior Design’s first official project as a team and it was also their first big success.  This project firmly set the design group into a solid position.  This project gave solid credibility to Luigi and his entire team of architects and designers.  The home has received plenty of press in London and Internationally.  The luxury home design has received endless praise and critical accolades.

  • […] Luxury fixtures and faucets can go a long way in making a statement as well, offering an opportunity to highlight your grand or sleek aesthetic preferences.  Having an expert plan the lighting is so major and almost too important to still call a luxury.  Not just which lighting fixtures but how many and exactly where they should go and for what purpose.  Designer faucets and fixtures can unify the look and feel of your bathroom, creating a highly stylized effect.  You can take the luxury up another level with gold and platinum plating and/or crystal and semi-precious stone accents.  Just keep it tasteful.  The bathroom above is by Oro Bianco and is featured in my post Classic Mayfair Penthouse.
