    The Kelly Hoppen Look

Kelly Hoppen is one of the most celebrated, influential, and sought-after interior designers in the world. Her widely recognized style, known as the “Kelly Hoppen look,” features neutral color palettes, clean lines, and beautiful textures blended into sumptuous opulence. The London-based designer’s understated elegance fuses East with West creating charming warmth and sumptuous opulence.

With meticulous attention to detail, Kelly creates completely bespoke interiors that are both practical and luxurious. With more than forty years in the industry, her projects around the globe number in the thousands. The designer takes the time to understand the lifestyle of those involved ensuring a design tailor-made for their needs.

THE KELLY HOPPEN LOOK IN HER LONDON HOME

Kelly Hoppen Look formal room B.5

The designer’s 9,000 square-foot residence in Central London highlights her talent and demonstrates her signature style.  She transformed the shell of a 19th century converted schoolhouse, later used as a warehouse into a two-story, six-bedroom home.  Calming shades of white, grey, taupe, and beige contrast with darker woods, creating a timeless elegance.  Luscious fabrics of suede, wool, and cashmere add depth and sensuality.

A vast open-plan space with 20-foot ceilings combines the living and dining areas with the kitchen.  At the front, two eight-person sofas gather with various armchairs, chaise longues and two-seat sofas to form a seating zone beneath three tall windows.  The arrangement holds up to thirty people, for Kelly loves to entertain.

“I was looking for something big, light and airy and that is why this space was so perfect because it encompasses those things.”

Kelly Hoppen Look dining room A

Kelly Hoppen Look dining room B

The center of the open space holds the dining area, with a rustic table that can seat thirty people.   A bespoke designed, black metal lighting fixture hangs above the table.

The long kitchen is situated towards the back and features cabinetry by Boffi, stainless steel, Caesarstone and oak finishes. Chain-mail-and-cotton blinds replace conventional window treatments.  A more intimate dining area completes the space.

“My color scheme is always neutral. I use a lot of whites, grays, and beige. Taupe is my absolute favorite! I find these colors incredibly soothing, and they are the perfect base for any design. When adopting a neutral palette, you can add beautiful splashes of color that will instantly brighten up any interior.”

    Kelly Hoppen Look entry A

    Kelly Hoppen Look entry B

The entrance includes a grid design on the marble floor and swivel panels which emphasize the ceiling height.  Five Carrara marble steps lead down into the spacious living area.  Lights in the steps create ambiance.

“My philosophy has always remained the same. It’s about creating calm, balanced environments based on Eastern cultures, i.e., order and creation of harmony. How people feel in a space is as important as the way it looks; one can’t be without the other to succeed.”

Kelly Hoppen Look living room detail

Bespoke grey lacquer swivel panels function as a partition between the living and private spaces.

Kelly is extremely passionate about making her design ethos accessible to the everyone. Her hugely popular, luxury e-store features a range of self-designed home products including accessories, bed linen, cushions, candles, furniture, towels, robes, and lights, all carrying Kelly’s iconic style.

    Create Timeless Elegance

    Kelly Hoppen Look master bedroom

The master bedroom is upstairs and overlooks the living space below.  The ceiling is lowered above the bed to mitigate the scale and create a more intimate feel.  Bedside lamps from Ochre hang against a backdrop of ribbed panels flanking either side of the bed.

“I’m enormously flattered that the ‘Kelly Hoppen look’ has become one which is both widely recognized and used by many people around the world when developing the interior style for their own homes. Neutral palettes, beautiful textures, and an East meets West aesthetic are all parts of my signature look. I’ve always wanted people to feel a great sense of warmth in their home, cocooned in comfort and surrounded by gorgeous pieces which I’ve discovered, all of which help to enhance those feelings of calm and relaxation.”

    Kelly Hoppen Look master bathroom

The master bathroom includes a free-standing bath designed by Kelly elevated on a marble platform with concealed floor lighting.  A Niamh Barry loop chandelier hangs above.

“Lighting is of the utmost importance when designing your interiors. I like to think it is like magic dust but, if you get it wrong, it can be a disaster! Adding lighting to a room is very easy – it just takes a bit of thought. Add a few small up-lighters around your home, behind pieces of furniture or in corridors to illuminate your interiors.”

    Kelly Hoppen Look dressing room

The spacious dressing room features large, black-and-white photographs, pendant lamps, and a full height triple-sided mirror.

“It is so important to create a timeless elegance in your home. Trends fade, but you want your designs to stand the test of time and always look chic. Instead of following a clear trend, adapt your home for the season by changing your accessories, update your sofa with some new cushions or hang some new art.”

OTHER PROJECTS COMPLETED WITH THE KELLY HOPPEN LOOK

“It is important to create an uncluttered ambiance. Add too much, and you run the risk of feeling claustrophobic in your own home. Overdecorating will also make your space appear smaller than it is.”

“My design is all about texture as I like to touch and feel my surroundings. Whether you use velvet and mix it with sheers or wood with chrome, it is the one texture bouncing off the other that is important.”

    Compact Luxury Design: Taylor Howes

This designer’s Knightsbridge pied-a-terre is a lesson in compact luxury design.  London-based luxury interior designer Karen Howes transforms a small, dated apartment into a charming city abode.

The 1,100 square-foot apartment occupies the first floor of an early 19th-century building. The space originally served as the formal reception rooms of a private townhome. The designer reinstated the original period features while introducing clever design touches and bespoke detailing to create a sophisticated home for contemporary life.

    COMPACT LUXURY DESIGN INSPIRATION

With the main drawing room, the designer created three zones: a sitting area, dining area, and a kitchen. Full-height paneled and mirrored walls slide away to reveal a fully customized Bulthaup model kitchen. The apartment features high ceilings and large windows. The original crown molding, which features a unique continuous grapevine design, was reinstated and continued throughout the residence.

Button-tufted sofas from the Taylor Howes collection define the seating area, accented with Donghia’s Hollywood and Dedar’s Poulette pillows. Custom faux-leather chairs with gilt details, also from the designer’s collection, surround an Abbott dining table from Bernhardt. Beautiful curtains in Dedar’s Aplomb wool with Spina tie-backs and valance trimmed with a Greek key from Clarence House frame the windows. An over-sized pendant light combining antiqued plated bronze with Murano glass and a silk shade presides over the room.

“The idea was to create a timeless elegance with fabulous, glamorous features, which definitely fits my personal style.” Karen Howes

The designer reconfigured the remaining space into a master bedroom suite with dressing area and a guest bedroom with en-suite bath, carefully utilizing every inch of available space for this compact luxury design.

Taylor Howes bespoke designed pieces create a soft and glamorous master bedroom. The bed extends from a custom upholstered and antiqued mirrored wall. A pair of bespoke bedside tables made with lacquered goatskin stands on either side. A curved console holding a pop-up television stands at the foot. White Company bed linens dress the bed, accented with pillows in Dedar’s Mademoiselle and Circuit fabrics. Thibaut’s Stablewood grasscloth covers the walls.

The designer collects 20th-century artworks. She often uses art as the starting point in her interior designs. Spending time as an art-dealer herself led to her collecting, particularly British artist. The pied-a-terre includes a Barbara Hepworth lithograph and a Dennis Bowen painting from 1962.

“I think art and accessories are what tell you about the character of the owner, and then good hospitality adds to the rest!” Karen Howes

  • Knightsbridge Townhouse Renovation

    Knightsbridge Townhouse Renovation

For our design inspiration today, we have a Knightsbridge townhouse renovation completed by London based Staffan Tollgard Design Group. The interiors of this 19th century Neo-Georgian townhouse have been reimagined for 21st-century modern luxury living. New merges with old to create a contemporary classic design.

Four-thousand square-feet unfolds over several floors, half-floors, and a newly incorporated sub-basement. A central glass light well runs through the home to provide natural sunlight to each level. Existing period architectural details were restored and enriched with modern fixtures and custom finishes. The design team completed the sensitive renovation with contemporary furnishings and accessories. This Knightsbridge townhouse renovation celebrates the home’s history while also providing the comforts and conveniences of modern luxury living.

The Classical proportions were maintained in the public receptions rooms spread across the ground and first floor. The main living room spreads the full width of the first floor with two large windows. Bespoke designed wooden cabinetry covers one wall. Sliding panels in the center conceal/reveal the television. Textured plaster walls and classic moldings throughout keep the design cohesive on each floor.

The living room opens to a second reception room which Tollgard decorated as a home office. The two spaces hold a pair of twin fireplaces. Contemporary furnishings and a neutral color palette create a sophisticated mood throughout.

“The interior architecture and material create a fantastic residence, but the furnishings and accessories make it a home.” Staffan Tollgard

    Classic Contemporary Design: Laura Hammett

Laura Hammett is a London-based interior design and interior architecture practice specializing in high-end, luxury residential projects. The multi-award-winning firm, formed in 2008 and now ran by husband-and-wife team Aaron and Laura Hammett, has quickly become an industry highlight offering highly personalized bespoke design services for developers and private clients. The firm’s work combines a meticulously detailed approach with their signature timeless classic contemporary design style tailored to meet the individual needs of each client.

For our design inspiration today, we are looking at some of the best from multiple completed projects starting with one of their latest. The first residence is a redeveloped historic Belgravia townhouse with connected mews property completed with property developers Residence One. This 7,100-square foot home includes beautiful entertaining rooms, five-bedroom suites, staff accommodations, and an indoor leisure complex with spa, pool, and gym. Laura Hammett completed this residence with over £1 million of bespoke designed furniture, fittings, and specially curated works of art presented as a “turnkey” luxury home. The Chester Square residence is the epitome of fashionable luxury London living.

    Signature Classic Contemporary Design

The opening photo shows the grand first-floor drawing room with its full height French doors swagged in elegant draperies. Architectural moldings and millwork respect the structure’s Georgian history while also emphasizing its ideal proportions. A restored original fireplace surround and mantel with a gilded mirror above serves as the room’s focal point. The room’s classic features combine with bespoke designed contemporary furnishings. Silk and suede upholstered sofas pair with damask-covered modern chairs on a custom silk rug with a Bella Figura chandelier suspended above to form the conversation area.

Laura Hammett classic contemporary Chester Square dining room

The formal dining room is another expression of the designer’s timeless classic contemporary design style. Another original fireplace surround mounted with a gilded mirror centers the room. On either side of the fireplace stands a bespoke designed dark oak cabinet with laser cut leather upholstered doors. Each cabinet conceals a Gaggenau wine fridge inside which is just brilliant. A bespoke contemporary lighting fixture suspends above the dining table.

Laura Hammett classic contemporary Chester Square study

The sophisticated study includes herringbone oak floors with antique brass trim. Bespoke oak and suede cabinetry provide plenty of space for public display and concealed storage.

Laura Hammett classic contemporary Chester Square master bedroom

Laura Hammett classic contemporary chester square master bedroom

The master bedroom suite is a decadent delight that commands the entire second floor with the bedroom, dressing room, two bathrooms, and a private terrace. Silk upholstered walls and plush, deep pile carpet envelope the room with textured luxury. A freestanding silk button-tufted headboard forms a partition that brings the room forward to create more intimate scale. The space behind it creates more dressing area before the wall of glass door closets that leads to a dedicated side dressing room. Silk draperies frame the windows and silk velvet covers the seat at the end of the bed dressed in custom luxurious linens.

Emperador marble covers the bathroom wall and floors. Bespoke vanity and dressing tables line the generously scaled room. The rear holds the walk-through shower while a freestanding soaking tub is in the center. The antique gold faucets and fixtures are by Samuel Health. The mirrors include automatic demisters and LED lighting. The room completes with a limestone fireplace mounted with an antique mirror that conceals the television within.

The home delivers a seamlessly flowing living environment, enriched with thoughtful functionality, elegance, and classic contemporary design style.

Laura Hammett classic contemporary Belgravia townhouse drawing room

Our next residence is another refurbished historic Belgravia townhouse completed with developers Residence One. This one is a bit smaller with 4,600 square feet over five floors. The refurbishment included the restoration of many period features balanced with the best for a contemporary luxury lifestyle. Laura Hammett designed the interior architectural details and finishes with full turnkey furnishings and their signature classic contemporary design styling. I covered this entire project at length in my post: London Georgian Townhouse Renewal. It is fabulous!

Above, we see the first floor, formal drawing room. The double-volume room is designed for entertaining with style. It arranges into two seating areas each gathered on a silk rug before a white marble fireplace, beneath a sparkling Ambika rock crystal chandelier.

Laura Hammett classic contemporary Belgravia townhouse dining room

Laura Hammett classic contemporary Belgravia townhouse study

The ground floor of this magnificent home holds both the formal dining room and the study with similar looks. The rooms have custom chevron oak flooring with brass inlays and integrated LED lighting. Both rooms feature silk-covered walls and classic architectural details, and both have white marble fireplaces. The furnishings for each of these rooms are bespoke designed. The chandelier in the dining room is by Serip, while the pendant in the office is a Porta Romana.

Laura Hammett completed the design with an understated elegance that would complement, rather than compete with the classic architecture.

Laura Hammett classic contemporary Belgravia mews house entrance hall

Our next residence is a redeveloped mews house located in the heart of Belgravia. This house is a little smaller and a bit more contemporary but still respectful of its historical origins. The 2,200 square-foot home arranges over three floors. Laura Hammett designed the architectural details and interior finishes. They also bespoke designed every piece of furniture in their classic contemporary design style. I covered this project in its entirety, which you can see in my post: Contemporary Mews House: Belgravia.

The above photo shows the ground floor entrance hall with its inlaid marble floors. The entrance hall gives access to the bespoke helical staircase with marble steps and recessed LED lighting. The stairway, which leads to the upper floor and the basement level below includes beveled mirrored walls along the back extending all three levels. A 23-foot bespoke designed Serip chandelier suspends down through the center to all floors. The mirrors reflect the natural light that comes in from the upper floors and distributes it through to the lower level. It is an extremely attractive and statement-making feature that also serves multiple practical purposes.

Laura Hammett classic contemporary Belgravia mews living room

The living room is just off the entrance hall. In this chic space, the ceiling shines with a specialized high-gloss finish which mirrors the polished marble floors below. These design details also help to reflect light through the home. A television integrated into the wall above a bronze-framed firebox serves as the room’s focal point. On either side of it, custom fumed eucalyptus shelves with mirrored backing create a visual display and storage. A pair of facing sofas centered by a pair of cocktail tables gather on a custom graphic rug to form the conversation area.

Laura Hammett classic contemporary Belgravia Mews house kitchen

The marble floors and high-gloss ceilings continue here in the sleek custom kitchen. Handmade, high-polished bronze cabinets with walnut interiors pair with Carrera marble counter-tops with mirrored back-splashes. The appliances are by Gaggenau. Laura Hammett’s use of bespoke luxury details significantly increases the appeal of this home’s limited space.

Laura Hammett classic contemporary Marylebone living room

Our final residence is a 2,200-square foot apartment set within a historic Georgian townhouse in Marylebone. The design team thoughtfully balanced features that reference the homes Georgian heritage with furniture and finishes that make it a home for contemporary life.

Here in the living room, the design team kept everything light and simple. A large cream sofa gathers with bespoke eglomise and bronze tables and accent chairs on a carved, polished rug to create a serene backdrop for the owner’s collection of Tibetan art.

Laura Hammett classic contemporary Marylebone bedroom

The luxurious master bedroom is a dream. It looks so inviting and comforting with the upholstered headboard, deep pile carpet, and the dense layers of window draperies. The pearly whites and silvery shades of gray make it even more calming and gorgeous.

The courtyard beyond is central to the home and accessible from all the main rooms making it excellent for extending entertaining outdoors.

Laura Hammett classic contemporary Marylebone dressing room

The perfect finale for this showcase apartment is the custom dressing room. Pearlescent walls, polished carpet, endless mirrors, glass-fronted closets, and display lighting. Just add some seating against the open wall, and many fashionistas would seldom care ever to leave.

Laura Hammett’s designs respond to the architectural vernacular of each property, contextual and geographical cues and the individual culture, lifestyle, and taste of each client. Bespoke design is integral to the Laura Hammett approach and every facet of a project is meticulously designed, ensuring that each home is just as practical as it is beautiful.

That concludes our design inspiration, my friend.

  • Bespoke Luxury Design: Chester Square

    Bespoke Luxury Design: Chester Square

Today’s residence is a newly redeveloped 19th-century, seven-story townhouse in the prestigious Belgravia district in London. This property was given an entirely bespoke luxury design by twin brothers Will & Ben Samuels of the boutique property development company Wilben. Every new feature is custom designed specifically for this home and finished to the highest specifications. Due to its historical and architectural significance, the brothers maintained and carefully restored many of the original period features. The results are a mix of contemporary and British heritage that perfectly captures the heart of high-end British interior design today.

The home is in affluent Chester Square, one of the most highly regarded garden squares in the city. Former prime minister Margaret Thatcher lived here after her tenure until she passed in 2013. It is the largest of the family townhomes that make up the imposing white stucco fronted terraces overlooking the private garden which is open only to residents of the square. This home uniquely benefits from a double mansard roof, allowing for additional bedrooms upstairs, and an unusually large mews house at the rear. The completed residence now totals over 8,000 square feet spread over seven floors with an elevator to reach each. Continue reading for more details.

Wilben bespoke luxury design Living room B

Wilben bespoke luxury design Living room rear

The first photos show the first-floor formal living room. Wilben maintained the room’s original proportions and restored some of the original features such as the cornices and the beautiful marble fireplace. Wainscoting and additional architectural detailing emphasize the dimensions while honoring the structure’s history. Silk wall-coverings line the upper portions of the walls adding a bit of luxe. The floors are handset, stained and lacquered oak. Bespoke, satin lacquer finished oak cabinetry includes integrated LED lighting and hand stitched padded panels. A custom commissioned crystal chandelier from Italy sparkles over the central seating area. Bespoke furnishings with tailored cushions and cashmere throws group into zoned conversation areas on custom wool/silk area rugs. Tailored window dressings in wonderful fabrics frame the windows that look out over the garden. The entire home is turn-key finished in anticipation of the lifestyle of those who will occupy it.

Wilben bespoke luxury design family room

To increase the available living space, Wilben connected the main property to the mews house at the rear. The original mews was rebuilt with a basement excavation that extends it down two levels to line up with the main house and the two merge to provide over 1,000 additional square-feet.

The living room opens onto a private open-air terrace leading to the family media room (above) created on the first floor of the mews. Accordion glass doors across the front fold completely to the side. A rear staircase provides direct access to the kitchen below. The room features a large skylight above complete with integrated electric blinds. The oak flooring and bespoke cabinetry in the front living area continue back here. Bespoke furnishings gather before the large television centered in the cabinetry.

    Wilben luxury design entrance hall

The main entrance hall on the ground level includes inlaid marble floors to create a more formal welcome. The restored original staircase shows beautifully with the silk carpet runner.

Wilben bespoke luxury design dining room

The formal dining room positions at the front on the ground level. The room centers with an original marble fireplace flanked with bespoke oak cabinetry with antiqued mirror backing and padded paneled doors. Applied moldings inset with fabric wallpaper cover the walls. A contemporary-style silk and crystal chandelier suspends above an oval table surrounded by chairs upholstered with different but complimentary fronts and backs. Wilben created the room for formal entertaining with a bespoke luxury design that balances Georgian heritage and contemporary living.

    Wilben bespoke luxury design study

A handsome study situates on the ground floor beyond the dining room. Stained oak floors in a chevron design and paneled walls create a smart home office that is both elegant and practical.

    Wilben bespoke luxury design kitchen

The kitchen and family dining area complete the ground floor, spanning the width across the rear. The bespoke Hacker kitchen features Quartz worktops with smoked glass back-splash and professional grade Gaggenau appliances. Italian marble clads the back wall and forms the breakfast bar. The thoughtfully designed space is suitable for both family use and grand scale entertaining.

    Wilben bespoke luxury design theater

The lower ground floor holds the home theater. A super-high definition projector displays onto a 108” acoustically transparent fixed screen. Stained timber inset with padded upholstered panels cover the walls. A back-lit, specialist finished coffered ceiling crowns the room. Deep, comfortable seating custom created for this space continues the bespoke luxury design that defines this home.

Wilben bespoke luxury design wine storage

The lower floor includes a wine storage area designed with stained and lacquered oak flooring and shelving.

    Wilben bespoke luxury design gym

    Wilben bespoke luxury design gym

A twenty-five-foot-high light well, formed in the center runs through the core from the basement up through to the first floor. A skylight at the top, forming part of the terrace floor, shines natural light through to interior windows and on down here to the lowest level. The space features a wall covered with green ivy to bring a sense of the outdoors into the rooms that open to it. The area at the bottom of the light well serves as the home gym/yoga room.

Wilben bespoke luxury design treatment room

Two bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms down here bring the total to eight.  The designers included these to serve as staff quarters along with a separate staff kitchen and a convenient side entrance. Here, one of the bedrooms serves as a spa treatment room.

Wilben bespoke luxury design bedroom A

Wilben bespoke luxury design bathroom A

The home’s configuration allows for two spacious full-floor master bedroom suites up on the second and third floor. Both bedrooms lead through bespoke dressing areas to large marble bathrooms. The home’s bespoke luxury design is very apparent in the bedrooms. The bed’s design integrates with the entire wall it extends from with upholstered and mirrored walls, built-in side cabinetry and side closets with upholstered doors. Across the room, more upholstered closets flank a central integrated writing or dressing nook. The beds finish with custom bedding and automated tailored draperies open and close at the touch of a button.

Wilben bespoke luxury design bedroom B

Four additional bedrooms each with en-suite bathrooms make up the fourth and fifth floors with luxury and style.  The home also includes a two-car rear loading garage created on the ground level of the mews house.

A double-volume open-plan living, and dining room span the front width of the apartment. Both rooms feature huge windows which flood the interiors with natural light. Soft shades of beige and gray on the matte paneled walls and the area rugs beneath the seating arrangements envelope the rooms with a calm, neutral palette. White highlights the ceiling heights and architectural details. Inky shades of blue strike a contemporary note and create an air of sophistication. Dark woods keep the spaces grounded and defined. Velvet sofas are accented with silk and geometric design.  Cut-velvet pillows provide a sensual, tactile experience while golden metallic accents imbue the space with a bit of luxury.

In this bedroom, Boscolo transformed a structurally limiting chimney breast into a principal design feature. The design team upholstered the projecting portion of the wall and centered the bed on it with a high reaching custom headboard. A coordinating bench rest at the foot of the bed.  They clad the wall space on either side of the chimney projection with full-height bespoke beveled mirrors. Fabrics in different colors and textures make up the accents dressing the bed. A tailored Roman shade gives the windows a smooth silhouette while blocking the sun as desired.

  • Notting Hill Townhouse: Peter Mikic

    Notting Hill Townhouse: Peter Mikic

London interior designer Peter Mikic has renovated a forgotten Notting Hill townhouse, transforming it into his very own luxury home. The mid-19th-century Italianate stucco townhome was one of the few remaining structures that had not yet been renovated. It was a rare find in the now revived cosmopolitan neighborhood that is once again one of the city’s more fashionable.

Architecturally, the house was sound, and the preservation protected facade was attractive. Fallen trees covered the garden, but the gate was still lovely. Everything else could be scrapped and rebuilt. It would be a lot of work, and that is precisely what the designer most liked about it. Mikic and his partner, television producer Sebastian Scott set about renewing the 6,200 square-foot Pembridge Gardens residence, restoring it to glorious splendor.

    NOTTING HILL TOWNHOUSE DESIGN

    Notting Hill townhouse vestibule

This Notting Hill townhouse was built early when the area was first developed for the upper classes. As the neighborhood declined, so did the house. Later it combined with a neighboring residence to form a shabby hotel. By the 1980s, the area started to gain favor again eventually earning its current affluent and highly sought-after state.

The two houses returned to their single dwelling status and a fashion designer purchased the other. What remained of the original house was partitioned with plasterboard into multiple strange hotel rooms. The original staircase had been removed to make more space for rooms. Even the entrance hall served as a room with all traffic directed to the neighboring house.  It was a wreck when the designer began the work to restore the home to its former glory.

These ills of the past were ripped out and the original plan reinstated.  Now one enters the large front door into the outer hall/vestibule which is clad in leafy wallcovering from de Gournay. Restore Classic architectural detailing observes the residence’s history.

Notting Hill townhouse drawing room A

Notting Hill townhouse drawing room B

Notting Hill townhouse drawing room detail

The drawing room is situated on the second floor. The room spans the full width across the front of the home with its three full height windows. Silk covered walls, articulated plaster-work, and the marble fireplace imbues the room with traditional elegance. Antiqued mirrored tiles line the window wall to create a little sparkle. Mikic bespoke designed almost all the furniture, many of the rugs, and lots of the lighting throughout the home. Many of the pieces are also now part of the designer’s home collection which you can see on his website.

Those items include the wool and silk Marble Tile Rug, the Prism Chandelier, the Stiletto Consoles on either side of the fireplace, the Cube Chairs on brass legs, the Star Console behind the blue sofa, the Half-Moon Cabinet in Zebra Veneer, and the Tubular Glass Wall Lights above the mantle.

The room includes a pastel by Paula Rego and a print by David Hockney hung on either side of the antique gilded mirror above the fireplace.

    Notting Hill townhouse Library

The Library is also on the second floor, and the style continues from the drawing room. The same chandelier repeats in here, as does the fireplace and mirror. Mikic ordered seven of the Adam-style marble fireplace surrounds from a carver in India to use throughout the home. A pair of the designers Two Drawer Stiletto Consoles are on either side of the fireplace. The graphic prints are by Sarah Morris. The library bookshelves are on the opposite wall.

Notting Hill townhouse formal dining room

The ground floor of the Notting Hill townhouse holds the formal dining room, kitchen, and breakfast room. The formal dining room again pairs traditional design elements with the designers mid-century modern inspired furnishings and lighting. Yellow grass paper lines the walls. Mikic designed all the furnishings in the room.  The pieces inspired much of the designer’s home collection.

Those items include the Pembridge Dining Table surrounded by his Curved Dining Chairs gathered on a 3-D Chain Rug in New Zealand wool. Also, the Drop Pendant Chandelier and the pair of Layered Glass Wall Lights over the fireplace are his designs. Last but not least, the fabulous pair of Art Deco-inspired Sideboard Cabinets finished in green Birds Eye Maple, White London plane, and antique marble tops with interiors finished in Tiger Shark and Ash with glass shelves.

    Notting Hill townhouse kitchen

Mikic designed the sleek modern kitchen’s cabinetry and fittings executed by Boffi. The appliances are all by Gaggenau. The traditional look created in the formal dining room with the walls and trim continues in the kitchen. The tall ceilings and the large full height window give the room an extra open and spacious feel. It is ideal for entertaining.

    Notting Hill townhouse breakfast room

The breakfast room is a quiet space at the back of the house, perfect for morning lounging. The furnishings arrange together on the designer’s Tibetan wool Banana Leaf Rug. His bespoke Abacus Dining Table serves as the room’s centerpiece. The etching above the banquet is by Lucien Freud.

    Notting Hill townhouse central hall

The spacious central passageway includes the newly replaced Portland stone staircase with wrought-iron balusters. I guess it was a stylistic choice to leave some of the raw concrete floors exposed, perhaps to avoid an overly formal atmosphere.

The master bedroom and bathroom suite command the entire third floor of this Notting Hill townhouse. Bronze silk covers the walls while chocolate brown velvet drapes the windows. The antique marble that lines the shower was originally quarried for the Vatican. The bathroom fittings are by Dornbracht. Mikic bespoke designed the silk velvet sofa and ottoman arranged on his New Zealand wool and silk Adam Rug. Glossy walnut lines the dressing area. The overall effect is very warm and cozy with a touch of low key masculine glamour.

    Notting Hill townhouse bedroom 2

Additional bedrooms and offices are on the remaining upper floors. In this beautiful bedroom, hemp wall covering by Altfield lines the walls. The Japanese gilt panels above the bed and the painting above the fireplace are family heirlooms from Sebastian’s family home in Scotland.

The upper floors of the London property owned by the designer have been reconfigured into a luxurious 1,790 square foot duplex penthouse complete with a rooftop garden and terrace. The Art Deco and fashion inspired interiors provide glamour alongside all the modern luxuries and conveniences desired and expected by high-end residential purchasers. Located in an 1897 townhouse that once served as a royal residence for the grandson of Queen Victoria, the completely renewed interiors feature finishes of the highest specifications.

Designed as a tribute to one of the world’s most celebrated British fashion designers

For our inspiration today, we are taking a look at this super chic penthouse whose design is a tribute to one of the world’s most celebrated British fashion designers.  I have always loved high fashion and follow that world closely.  I was a huge fan of Alexander McQueen’s extraordinary designs starting at Givenchy and was utterly thrilled with his collections under his Alexander McQueen label.  Be inspired!

The principal rooms feature black American walnut wood floors and a signature color palette of cream, silver, and black. Here in the spacious living room, the ceilings reach 10.5 feet high. A fireplace centers the room, surrounded by mirrored walls and bespoke designed cabinetry. Recessed bespoke shelving lines the opposite wall.

Silver leaf wallpaper by Cole & Son covers the interior wall where large famous photographs of the designer and his fashions are displayed. Cream sofas gather with contemporary glass coffee tables to complete the seating area. Mink fur throws and silk draperies by Drop create texture and comfort. Skull motif lamps offer inspired accents while a large bespoke crystal chandelier sparkles in the center of it all.

The lower floor consists of the gracious living room and an open kitchen and dining room. The two rooms link together with an entrance hall lined with mirrors that forms a catwalk of sorts.

Professional grade appliances including a full height wine cooler integrate seamlessly into the minimalist design.

Beyond the kitchen is the dining area with seating for ten. The outer wall’s three sets of French doors open onto the terrace that spans the front façade of the penthouse. A side wall functions as a gallery featuring large photographs of McQueen, his various muse, and his iconic fashion. Crystal chandeliers suspend above the island and the dining table.

McQueen gained planning permission for the roof terrace but never got to see it completed.  It is now finished with over 700 square feet of black timber decked space designed for outdoor entertaining. The terrace includes two living areas, an outdoor kitchen, BBQ, and bar area. The rooftop terrace and gardens provide beautiful panoramic views over Mayfair.

The 14,000 square-foot residence spans three floors and stands on an acre lot within Surrey’s exclusive gated residential estate, St. George’s Hill.  The exterior facade is in a Neo-Georgian style in red brick with stucco detailing.  A central pediment over a canopied portico with sash windows, cornice, and balustrades all create a truly grand first impression.

A sweeping driveway leads to the entry of the home with a water feature forming the centerpiece.  A ramp leads off the drive around to the side entrance of the underground garage. The exceptionally manicured grounds include box hedges, mature trees, and flower beds.

    Neo-Georgian style entrance hall

The front door opens into the statement-making columned, double-height entrance hall. An opulent bespoke designed, nineteen-foot-tall chandelier sparkles down through the vast hall. Suede-covered walls and extensive millwork soften the marble floors. The home’s ground floor entertaining rooms flow out from this central location making it perfect for receiving guests.

    Neo-Georgian style formal living room

Shades of gray and purple dress the sophisticated formal living room. The tailored styling of the room with its classical architectural details reaffirms that this home is a Contemporary Classic. The design throughout supports today’s luxury lifestyle. The seating area arranges around the fireplace, which serves as the room’s focal point. Back-lighting illuminates the tray ceilings from within while a contemporary tiered chandelier in the center punctuates the room with glamour.

    Neo-Georgian style formal dining room

The formal living room leads through sliding pocket doors into the formal dining room. A large square table provides seating for twelve comfortably in custom upholstered chairs. A circular bespoke designed chandelier centers the space above the table. French doors open to the rear gardens and extend the entertaining space outdoors.

    Neo-Georgian style family room

The family room is centrally positioned at the rear of the home. The seating area grounds the spacious room with comfy upholstered furnishings. The atmosphere is relaxed and less formal but still excellent for guests. Grand French doors line the back wall to open the chamber to the rear gardens. The floor-plan is ideally suited for entertaining on a large scale and for enjoying everyday family life.

All the appliances are by Gaggenau. Accordion doors across the outer wall of the breakfast room fold completely away to open the space fully to merge indoor and outdoor entertaining areas.  A separate service kitchen and pantry are adjacent.

    Neo-Georgian style study

The ground floor study evokes the feel of a Contemporary Classic Mayfair office. Bespoke designed hounds-tooth pattern wallpaper covers the walls. Various fabrics and textures layer to create depth and comfort. The color palette established in the rest of the rooms continues here.

    Neo-Georgian style spiral staircase

A sweeping spiral staircase leads down to the leisure floor or up to the gallery landing overlooking the entrance hall. Another bespoke chandelier cascades down through the center illuminating all levels.

The master bedroom suite stretches the width of the home with large windows overlooking the landscaped rear gardens. Beige, taupe, and gray tones color the room, which includes a sitting area with a grand fireplace. Note the bedside cascading crystal lights and the upholstered wall behind the bed. I don’t know how well those lights function for typical bedside purposes, but they look nice in the photo.

On either side of the bedroom, there are two dressing rooms and two en-suite bathrooms. The custom-created dressing rooms feature beautiful, high-gloss back-lit, bespoke cabinetry. The spacious bathrooms feature book-matched Calacatta marble.  One has a beautiful free-standing soaking tub while the other has a walk-in waterfall shower.

  • Livable Luxury: Helen Green Design

    Livable Luxury: Helen Green Design

For our design inspiration today, we have a penthouse apartment in London’s fashionable Knightsbridge completed by Helen Green Design.  The residence features an open concept suitable for family living and gracious entertaining. A neutral color palette and the layering of unique textural combinations create a home that is calm and quietly sophisticated. The bespoke designed furniture and lighting is scaled and proportioned exactly for the home.  Multiple furniture pieces and custom finishes from the Helen Green Design Collection help to create the firm’s signature “livable luxury.”

The design firm was presented with a blank canvas and commissioned to create the home with a full interior architecture and finish out package including the layout design and build through to the furniture and final accessorizing.

In the opening photo, we see the home’s formal living room. On the walls, Rubelli’s Looks Like Grass wallcovering sets the tone for the neutral color palette while adding texture. The light oak flooring here, and throughout all the living areas, further establishes a neutral color base. A pair of sleek contrasting sofas in pale linen and darker velvet forms the backdrop for colorful decorative pillows. A pair of armchairs and a deep buttoned bench grouped around a modern style coffee table, all arranged on a contemporary area rug complete the conversational area.

A feature wall lined with bespoke cabinetry fronted with onyx stone, highlighted with antiqued mirror and brass trim imbues the space with a bit of livable luxury. A large painted canvas and Alexander Calder mobile provide additional color and visual drama, along with the unique brass LED chandelier suspended above.

    LIVABLE LUXURY DESIGN INSPIRATION

    helen green livable luxury entrance

Upon entering the penthouse, the designer details are immediate.  Across the way from the elevator entrance, stands Helen Green Design Collection’s Limited Edition Sky Cabinet.  The two-door cabinet is finished in a specialist hand-painted liquid bronze and mounted with Calacatta Oro polished stone.  The Collection’s hand-painted, bronze trimmed Teardrop Mirror hangs above the Sky Cabinet.  The inviting entrance has an eclectic, international vibe.  Note the doors leading into the dining room, done with specialist starburst detailing.

Design Director Natalia Miyar is driving the evolution of the firm’s stylistic approach with an emphasis on design innovation and the creation of new unique textures and finishes.  This growth allows for the artistic advancement of the company while staying true to their design ethos of livable luxury.  We can see those innovations displayed throughout this residence.

Helen Green livable luxury dining room

Helen Green livable luxury dining room details

In the formal dining room, Helen Green Design Gracie chairs upholstered in luxurious velvet and crisp linen complement the oval dining table with its dark gray finish. A trio of bronze and glass lighting pendants hang above the table which largely defines the mood of the room. The pair of sideboards in the Helen Green Design Betulla finish have doors with a specialist finish of charcoal gesso and mount on satin brass feet. Carefully curated accessories mimic those in the living area creating continuity through the room. The dining room is both elegant and functional.

helen green livable luxury powder room

In the powder room with its pocket door, an oversize mirror creates a greater sense of space. Polished silver gray travertine contrasts with the warmer tones of antique brass on the vanity and mirror, while nickel taps and a glass pendant add a freshness to the room.

helen green livable luxury family room A

helen green livable luxury family room B

The star feature in the open-plan family room and the kitchen is the panoramic view over the city.  A series of windows and slide-away glass walls open this family room side fully to the outdoor wrap-around terrace.  A low profile L-shaped sofa creates a space for casual comfort and relaxation. The colors mimic those of the city views to which the décor gives itself. Luminous Helen Green Design Collection wallpaper Isla backs the wall of bespoke cabinetry, which complements the space’s gray tones and provides a backdrop to allow the sculptural accessories to bring character to the room.

    helen green livable luxury kitchen

    helen-green-livable-luxury-breakfast-banquet

In the kitchen, Naica polished marble creates an elegant feature of the island and also creates the backsplash. The neutral bespoke cabinetry holds all of the built-in appliances and is complete with unique bronze handles. The design provides adequate and functional storage to keep surfaces free from clutter.

The kitchen includes a built-in banquette dining area for casual meals. Crisp linen covers the custom banquette. The table features a Helen Green Design Betulla finish, accented with starburst detailing. Wingback dining chairs complete the setting. The two vibrant artworks displayed above add a welcome shot of color.

helen green livable luxury master bedroom full view

helen green livable luxury master bedroom

A beautifully tailored selection of cream and taupe fabrics create a feeling of serenity in the master bedroom. A four-poster Canopy bed adds a bit of grandeur to the room. Elegant light linen draperies flank the upholstered bed which includes a pop-up television at the base. The wall of bespoke cabinetry includes a built-in firebox for coziness.  Livable luxury is on full display. Onyx bedside lamps illuminate from the tops of the Helen Green Design Clancy nightstands. Starburst designs finish the doors. The bespoke details and finishes abound here and in the custom walk-in wardrobes.

helen green livable luxury master bathroom

Calacatta Oro marble selected by the architectural design team in Italy envelopes the master bathroom. A specialist Mason installed the stone to ensure the utmost quality.  A flat-screen television before the freestanding soaking tub is a “livable luxury” that I have on my list.  A separate door leads through to the enclosed toilet and large shower.  The leather-upholstered vanity seats complement the nickel and brass of the lighting and mirror while adding depth overall.

helen green livable luxury guest bedroom A

helen green livable luxury guest bedroom A details

A beautiful layering of pattern and color combine to create a guest bedroom that is rich in comfort and warmth. The dark petrol blue fabric wallcovering behind the upholstered headboard creates depth. A specialist wall covering adorns the bedside tables to add interest. The white parchment desk creates a fresh, crisp aesthetic while the antique bronze accents add richness.

helen green livable luxury guest bedroom B

An earthy palette forms the backdrop for this beautifully light and calm second guest bedroom. A floor to ceiling headboard featuring upholstered geometric patterning lends a softness to the bedroom.  The bedding in all of the bedrooms is very attractive.  I like the color and fabric combinations.  Yes, I am a fan of plentiful pillows.  More is more with decorative pillows.

  • Park Crescent Luxury Homes

    Park Crescent Luxury Homes

The Park Crescent, London’s only Royal crescent, has been transformed to provide 20 two to four-bedroom ultra-prime luxury homes by Amazon Property.  The Regency-era architecture, designed by renowned architect John Nash, combines with fresh contemporary interior design in this redevelopment of one of the city’s most sought-after addresses.

The development includes lateral, mezzanine and duplex apartments with 5-star hotel-style concierge.  The homes have been created within four exclusive buildings in the east crescent.  The Royal Crescent consists of a grand stretch of two facing crescent shaped cream stucco façade terraces (townhouse rows).  The crescent overlooks eight acres of magnificent private resident’s gardens which front 410 acres of Regent’s Park.

    Park Crescent luxury homes exterior

The Park Crescent traces its Royal origins back to 1811 when Prince George became Prince Regent and Acting Head of State due to the illness of his father King George III.  The Prince Regent wanted his own palace and commissioned John Nash to create a master plan for a Royal residence, surrounded by park land.  It was to be complete with a circus of grand townhouses providing palatial luxury homes for his family and friends, located on the Crown Estate lands of Regent’s Park.

The final design was for a grand Royal crescent, built between 1812-1820, with cream stucco façade and tall sash windows, overlooking private gardens and the park.  In 1820, the Prince Regent became King George IV and moved into Buckingham Palace, and no longer needed a palace of his own.  The crescent otherwise continued as planned and immediately became London’s most sought after address.  Through the years, it has served as home to exiled Royals, aristocrats, Ambassadors, business tycoons and high society.

The Park Crescent is once again one of London’s finest residential developments.

In 2013, Amazon Property purchased The Park Crescent and had the exciting and bold vision to carefully convert and meticulously restore the Royal crescent back into its original role as one of London’s most prestigious residential addresses.  Due to the historically important, iconic and rare Nash architecture, the restoration of the Royal crescent has taken several years of careful planning and highly skilled construction and restoration work to materialize.  It has required outstanding craftsmanship, fine attention to detail and materials of the finest quality, sourced from around the world.

Behind the building’s retained classical Nash facade, newly built luxury homes have been created which combine illustrious history with large lateral living spaces, generous ceiling heights, and state of the art specification and technology.

park crescent luxury homes living study room

The Luxury Homes created within The Park Crescent each has its own character and distinctive features.  Each home ranges from 1,429 to 4,127 square-feet in size with ceilings up to 12 feet high. Every residence has a spacious double or triple volume reception room overlooking the private gardens and Regent’s Park.  Features include full height doors, sash windows, generous ceiling heights and solid Oak flooring laid in bespoke designs.

Residents will have direct views over and access to their own eight acres of magnificent gardens.  Park Square and Park Crescent Gardens form two of the grandest gardens in central London.  The sweeping lawns laid out between 1811 and 1827, echo the design of the gardens of Buckingham Palace.  The extensive grounds include gravel pathways, loggias, plantings and summer tennis courts.

The first phase release of The Park Crescent successfully sold, and now this highly anticipated project is complete.  Amazon Property has scheduled the main launch in October to coincide with the world-renowned Frieze London Art Exhibition.  Guests will attend a VIP launch in a specially built glass pavilion in the gardens on the 6th of October.

A newly designed show residence completed by luxury design house 1508 London serves as the centerpiece of the launch.  The launch will also showcase other unseen luxury homes completed by design houses Oliver Burns, DH Liberty and Taylor Howes.  These residences will showcase artwork by artist including Marc Chagall, Joan Miro, Salvador Dali, Andy Warhol, David Hockney, Damien Hurst and Marc Quinn and form a ‘mini-Frieze’ showcase for the development.  Visitors will have the opportunity to be the first to see the quality, unrivaled lateral living space and sweeping park views provided by these newly finished luxury homes.

Charles Gourgey, Director at Amazon Property said: “Luxury property is always defined by its provenance, uniqueness, and location.  London has many streets, and a small collection of squares yet it has only one Royal crescent: The Park Crescent.  This absolute rarity combined with the exacting quality of the residences sets this development clearly apart from any other and positions it as one of London’s finest residential developments.”

Many of these new luxury homes created in The Park Crescent have already sold.  Those remaining are available for immediate occupation.

The development borders the beautiful Regents Park with all the delights it has to offer. This includes a boating lake, open-air theater, and music entertainment. Park Crescent East enjoys an unparalleled location with the Royal Park to the north and the shopping facilities of Regent Street and Oxford Street to the South. Positioned at the northern end of Portland Place, the crescent straddles Marylebone in the west and Fitzrovia to the east.

Upon entering the home, one steps into a long central corridor that extends through the apartment, connecting to the main living area at the far end. This corridor is the primary passage route from which all the other rooms flow. Casa Forma developed two types of bespoke designed paneling features to highlight this main hall. On one side, high-gloss sycamore panels with an Ombre color gradient add light and subtlety. On the opposite, an Art Deco-inspired map of Hyde Park’s pathways simplified into geometric shapes, creates an abstract design that serves as the focus. The map combines metalized panels with multi-tone resin fill and bronze trims connected by bronzed mirror panels with triple bevel edges.

The interior design in the main living area focuses on maximizing the incredible open views over Hyde Park. Floor-to-ceiling, triple-glazed glass windows and doors make up the three outer walls. The double-volume living room divides into two seating areas with the furniture layout arranged to best take in the light and view. The designers completed the interior wall with sliding panels made of dyed goat skin tiles set in rosewood interspaced with mirrored panels with Deco-style beveled glass relief.

The entertainment system tucks away out of view behind the sliding wall panels. A novel turntable resides in a unique niche concealed by a commissioned eglomise painting. A deluxe bar with LED lighting details also hides behind the panels. The rooms mood and use can change completely by adjusting the panels.

The formal dining room’s luxurious design includes a feature wall created with silver and gold leaf panels. The opposite wall features bronze and glass cabinetry framed with a back-lit mosaic of tortoiseshell and tiger eye. How is that for your original bespoke design details? Above the table, a grouping of blown glass lighting pendants provides the room with a warm amber glow. You can imagine just how extraordinary this must look with the lights low for dinner.

One of the original four bedrooms now serves as a sexy study that doubles as a games room. The room has a sleek, contemporary finish. Casa Forma bespoke designed the magnificent units lining the walls which were then made by skilled craftsmen in Italy. The designers used stained solid Indian Rosewood with a piano high-gloss finish complete with bronze trim. The room can still act as a guestroom for the kidskin leather sofa converts into a bed.

The designers reconfigured the en-suite bathroom linked to the study to include a Swedish dry sauna. This detail proved to be the biggest challenge of the entire project. The smartly designed building has the latest heat and moisture detectors which presented a problem. Casa Forma ultimately perfected the design, and the small yet complex feature is a hugely successful addition.

Casa Forma completed the bedrooms with designs that embrace both style and elegance to provide the ultimate in comfort. The bespoke designed wall units continue in here with their rich high gloss finish and Art Deco-inspired shapes. Luxurious hand painted silk covers the walls accented with beveled glass finished mirror panels. The neutral color palette used throughout the rest of the home continues in the bedrooms. Each bedroom has its own spacious en-suite marble bathroom.

Custom rugs, sumptuous fabrics, expert lighting, bespoke furnishings and a state-of-the-art home automation system complete the home with a smart, absolutely original luxurious design. Such attention to detail is typical for a residence within One Hyde Park. As residents, the owners also have access to the development’s multiple world-class high-end facilities.

Designed by Lord Rogers, the Pritzker Prize-winning architect, One Hyde Park is the first Residences at Mandarin Oriental in Europe. When originally built, the press proclaimed that it was one of London’s most prestigious residential addresses. With striking design, exemplary service, luxurious facilities, and impenetrable security ensuring privacy, the homes within One Hyde Park tend to be the preference of a certain discerning international high-net-worth audience.

That concludes our design inspiration for today, my friend.
