California Modern Design on Sunset Plaza
Today for our design inspiration, we have a California Modern design, luxury resort-like residential compound located along the Sunset Strip, near West Hollywood. The exceptional property boast sweeping panoramic views of the city, made possible by an endless number of vantage points created throughout the estate. This is a sophisticated 13,000 square-foot dream home spread over 2 levels and 3 structures, with 8 bedrooms and 9 bathrooms, designed by highly acclaimed Hagy Belzberg Architects that radiates an unmistakable sense of strength, volume and boldness. To be clear, by California Modern design I mean that it has a bit of mid-century modern feel, makes use of lots of natural elements; stone, raw woods and such, and the home fully embraces indoor-outdoor living with endless floor to ceiling windows, many that roll away to completely open the space to the outdoors. It’s a rather large and smart estate with sophisticated design, but remains warm and inviting in that west coast casual sort of way.
Built on a hillside and combining existing sloped terrain with flat, terraced areas, the luxury home has been designed to provide expansive views out, while prohibiting views from outside the property in, a highly sought after quality in the Los Angeles Hills. The property is walled and gated and lined with landscaping trees and shrubs.
Guest entering the home through the glass double doors immediately get a sense of the home’s vast openness. Just a few steps in, and the entry hall opens up to double heights with glass ceilings, and flows all the way through to the glass door leading out to the back. This central passage-way also serves to delineate the public and private spaces. To the right there is a formal dining room that opens onto a spacious family room which opens to the home’s theater. To the left, there is the open living room and spacious kitchen with breakfast bar and the glass fronted wine storage room on the way in, along with various other functioning rooms of the home.
The large open kitchen includes 2 islands, a breakfast bar, marble counter-tops, Miele appliances, and is equipped for serving large gatherings. This entire home has been designed with entertaining in mind. It has even been described as the ultimate entertainment compound and can accommodate over 1000 of your chosen friends, while the drive and parking areas can hold 30 of their cars.
The wine storage room holds 850 bottles of your favorite spirits! The entire estate is fully automated of course, so every detail, including the temperature control of this wine room, can be adjusted with your touchscreen.
The stairs lead up to an upper floor library established in the center with the master suite on one side and the remaining bedrooms located on the other side.
The very spacious master bedroom suite includes a large sitting room that opens up to a deck overlooking the back(not shown). The sitting room leads to the actual bedroom which also has a sitting area within it and opens up to a balcony overlooking the front. Pocket doors open to the master bath designed for two people, each having their separate spaces on either end and joined in the middle with the steam/rain shower big enough for both.
The custom finished master bedroom closet is fabulous!! Note the glass top display cases in the center island. This is luxury design my style!!
The luxury home has been designed so that all 8 bedrooms have an en suite bath, spacious closets, a balcony, and breathtaking views. This photo shows the view from the balcony of bedroom 4 overlooking the front lawn with large infinity edge pool and spa and the city beyond.
The home includes an attached 2-car garage on the backside as well as an additional detached two-story, 3-car garage with the entire 2nd floor being devoted to the home’s fully equipped gym (wellness center).
The third structure completing the estate is the guest house. Placed higher up on the hill, the two-story contemporary design structure comprises a living area, an eat-in kitchen, and 2 bedrooms with en suite baths, along with its own courtyards, balconies, and views.
The residence was designed as a high end luxury spec home by the architect for a group of property developers, and was listed for $28 million. The house has since sold!
